About Hutchinson Kansas
Hutchinson
is the largest city and county seat of Reno County, Kansas, located less than
50 minutes northwest of Wichita, 219 miles southwest of Kansas City, Missouri,
on the Arkansas River. Reno County's nearly 65,000 residents enjoy their
central location just a few hours from the Rockies, Ozarks and the metropolitan
areas of Kansas City, Denver and Dallas.
Hutchinson is visited by 1.5
million visitors annually and offers a wide range of attractions and museums
including the Kansas
Cosmosphere and Space Center. This impressive Smithsonian-affiliated
facility houses one of the most comprehensive space museums in existence and
offers the Carey IMAX Dome Theater; Dr. Goddards Laboratory, a live
rocket science demonstration; the Justice Planetarium Theater with both star
and laser shows; and a host of educational programs. The Cosmosphere is home to
the actual Apollo 13 command module Odyssey, an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, a
full-scale model of the Space Shuttle, German V-1 and V-2 rockets, and the
worlds largest collection of Soviet space artifacts in the Western world.
For 10 days each September, Hutchinson is home to the largest event in
Kansas - the Kansas
State Fair, where visitors will find good old-fashioned fun. The Fair
features over 280-acres of the best of Kansas' agriculture, livestock and
commerce, as well as live entertainment. Popular Fair attractions include an
animal birthing center and an exotic animal petting zoo. Concerts range from
country to pop at the 10,000-seat grandstand and three other stages throughout
the grounds.
